Liposuction

Liposuction

Overview

It is suitable for the treatment of discreet areas of fatty deposits, but not for generalised weight reduction. However, at the Cosmetic Surgery Centre we have a specialist, who can advise and guide you on how to lose weight and strengthen your muscles.

The Tumescent Solution (Wetting Solution)

Wetting solutions are infused into the fatty layer of your skin before the fat is vacuumed out. Before wetting solutions came along, surgeons went in dry, and the result was bleeding and bruising.

The tumescent solution contains salt water, adrenaline and a local anesthetic. The adrenaline shrinks blood vessels to minimize blood loss in the fat to be extracted. This infusion causes the skin to become swollen and firm. The tumescent technique uses more fluid than other available liposuction methods, infusing two to six times as much fluid as the volume of the fat to be removed.

How many kilos (ponuds) can it take away?

We do not talk in kilograms because fat does not weigh that much (in fact fat is lighter than water). For this reason we measure fat in volume (millilitres and litres), and not in weight (kilograms). We are not aiming to reduce your overall weight, but rather to change your shape. However, our specialist can achieve a swift reduction of your weight, if you follow our weight reduction program.

The Tumescent Liposuction Procedure

During tumescent liposuction, your surgeon first marks the area on your body where he or she will remove fat. Next, the agreed-upon method of anesthesia is administered: local, IV sedation or general anesthesia. Tumescent liposuction usually involvesĀ  general anesthesia.

Next, your surgeon administers the solution directly into the fatty deposits under your skin, in preparation for the procedure. He or she then threads a thin cannula into the fatty layer of your skin through a small opening in the skin. The cannula is attached to a vacuum-like device. Your surgeon guides the cannula back and forth and vacuums out the fat into a sterile collection tube. Depending on the surgeon’s preference, laser or ultrasound can be used to make the fat removal easier and potentially more effective. Check with your surgeon to find out what is best for you.

You will be instructed to wear a support garment on the treated area for several days to several weeks, depending on your surgeon’s preference. Your surgeon will go over any recovery information with you. Following his or her advice can help minimize any complications.

Tumescent Liposuction Cost

Tumescent liposuction cost varies based on the area of the body being treated, and how many areas are being treated. The cost is higher for large areas of the body such as the abdomen, and lower for body parts such as the outer thighs or neck.

General price per region: 1.500-1.700 USD. Discount approved in case of more regions done at the same proceduresaprove discount in case of more regions done at the same procedure.

How long does it take?

Usually only three to four hours. You’ll need to allow a little extra time as you will be required to stay and relax for a little while after the procedure is finished. Expect to be in the centre for 10 to 16 hours

Do you have to be overweight to have it done?

Liposuction is most suitable for people who are of normal weight but out of proportion. Overweight people can also be helped by liposuction, but they must also deal with the cause of their weight gain.

Will fat ever return to the area?

Liposuction has a long term rather than a short term effect. It is surprisingly hard to make fat return to the area treated by liposuction. This is because liposuction removes the fat cells in the area. If you do put on more weight, the fat is more likely to accumulate in other areas. Obviously we should all be aware of the principles of good nutrition and that liposuction is a treatment that removes fat deposits – it is not a substitute for good diet.

How long do I have to be off work?

Some patients go back to work the following day. It is a better idea to take six to seven days off.

How long do I wear bandages?

Dressings will normally be in place for one or two days. When they are removed you will need to wear an elastic support garment for three weeks.

Will there be bruising and swelling?

Bruising is common with the this treatment. It disappears in week or two. Swellingis also possible, so make sure thatĀ  proper support garments are worn

Will the skin be flabby after liposuction?

Skin is very elastic and will shrink back very well. Elastic support garments are also important to ensure a smooth, wrinkle free result.

Can I exercise afterwards?

Exercise is encouraged from the end of the first week, although it may take longer to feel comfortable doing high impact aerobics or jogging. Circuit training, swimming, bike riding, steppers, etc. are good for you.

Can I drive home following liposuction?

Because you will be given an anaesthetic it is not recommended for you to drive that day. You should arrange for a taxi, or a friend or relative to pick you up.
